Presentation of the book Kammouneh by Aya Debes

A two-part artist talk: Aya will first present her book Kammouneh. Then, she will cook a Lebanese dish featured in her book, “allowing visitors to discover the flavors that carry these stories of resilience and heritage. I hope to offer an immersive look at how food embodies cultural survival, giving voice to the stories people experience in the face of displacement.”

Food shapes identity and culture, but in times of conflict, one of the first aspects of culture to disappear is its food heritage. I created a picture book to explore how poverty and war impact food culture—something deeply connected to both the people and the land. In this project, I illustrate recipes rooted in the Lebanese land, highlighting the traditions of gathering ingredients, preparing dishes, and cooking.” I also map conflict-affected areas in Lebanon and tell the stories of displaced people who, despite being driven from their homes, use food as a form of cultural resistance. Recreating traditional dishes becomes an act of preserving identity, honoring memories, and resisting erasure”.

Through queer radio archives, I search for voices that still resonate. Narratives appear and disappear in frequencies of intersecting intimacies. Following the waves, real and fictional images intermingle, meet, and converse.
