Face to face

À un tournant difficile de sa vie personnelle et professionnelle, le chorégraphe Florent Mahoukou revient à Pointe-Noire, où, pour lui, tout a commencé avec la danse. Son pays natal a peu évolué et rien n’est proposé aux habitants pour sortir de leur situation précaire. Seules des activités informelles leur permettent de survivre. « Face à Face » est une remise en question de soi avec une volonté de comprendre la vie, où le système d’adaptation confine à l’art.

At a difficult turning point in his personal and professional life, choreographer Florent Mahoukou returns to the town of Pointe Noire where, for him, everything began with dance. His native country has evolved very little and nothing is offered to the people to get out of their precarious situation. Only informal activities allow them to survive. « Face to Face » is a questioning of oneself with a desire to understand life, where the system of coping borders on art.

Florent Mahoukou est artiste, danseur-performeur, interprète du théâtre et chorégraphe, franco-congolais. Dès l’âge de 12 ans il crée un groupe de danse dans les rues à Brazzaville « BANA 16ème ». Il découvre les Tambours de Brazza ce qui nourrit son envie de danser. En 2000, il débute sa carrière scénique et intègre la Compagnie BINA-NGOUA/Serge Bissadissi à Pointe-Noire. En août 2002, il se lance dans le paysage chorégraphique avec sa première pièce « Corps en transe ». De 2003 à 2006, il enseigne la danse traditionnelle congolaise au lycée français de Pointe-Noire. Participe lors de nombreuses scènes auprès entre autres avec, la Cie Paco Décina, Carolyn Carlson et Sara Orselie, Salia Sanou et Seydou Boro, Amadou Bouro, Kettly Noel, Eric Lamoureux, Jean-Pierre Amiel… Il n’a arrêté d’approfondir son travail corporel et de diversifier ses expériences. Depuis 2007, Florent MAHOUKOU est initiateur et directeur artistique de l’événement RUE DANCE, Balades chorégraphiques dans les rues au Congo, Niger, Gabon… Collaborateur de Ndjila na Ndjila avec la Compagnie BANINGA, Lauréat Danse l’Afrique Danse 2008, il est en parallèle interprète du Sacre du printemps au sein de la Compagnie Heddy MAALEM et de Nos enfants nous font peur… avec le Groupe RICTUS/David BOBEE. Le chorégraphe prolonge l’affirmation de sa personnalité artistique avec sa pièce On The Steps… Lauréat du premier Prix des rencontres chorégraphiques d’Afrique et de l’océan indien et du Prix Puma Créative à Bamako. Enrichi par les rencontres et expériences qui l’ont nourrie dans son parcours d’interprète au Congo comme à l’étranger il a développé une écriture chorégraphique qui lui est propre. Il continue de confronter son travail chorégraphique en collaborant avec d’autres chorégraphes comme : le professeur de danse Laurent Longa Fo, le chorégraphe Andreya Ouamba, le chorégraphe Gregory Maqoma, le metteur en scène David Bobée, l’auteur écrivain Ronan Chéneau, l’auteur dramaturge Dieudonné Niangouna, le Dramaturge et metteur en scène Hedi Clermont De Tonnerre… Il est aussi initié à la dynamique Hip Hop, il s’inspire du territoire urbain. Son univers chorégraphique intime tourne autour de la suspension et de la joie du mouvement, la jubilation dans le mouvement dansé. Clairement contemporain, il est le reflet de son époque, parfois à la limite de l’avant-garde…

Florent Mahoukou is a Franco-Congolese artist, dancer-performer, theater performer, and choreographer. At the age of 12, he created a street dance group in Brazzaville, « BANA 16ème. » He discovered the Tambours de Brazza, which fueled his desire to dance. In 2000, he began his stage career and joined the BINA-NGOUA/Serge Bissadissi Company in Pointe-Noire. In August 2002, he entered the choreographic landscape with his first piece, « Corps en transe. » From 2003 to 2006, he taught traditional Congolese dance at the French high school in Pointe-Noire. Participates in numerous scenes with, among others, the Paco Décina Company, Carolyn Carlson and Sara Orselie, Salia Sanou and Seydou Boro, Amadou Bouro, Kettly Noel, Eric Lamoureux, Jean-Pierre Amiel… He has continued to deepen his body work and diversify his experiences. Since 2007, Florent MAHOUKOU has been the initiator and artistic director of the RUE DANCE event, choreographic walks in the streets of Congo, Niger, Gabon… Collaborator of Ndjila na Ndjila with the BANINGA Company, Laureate of Danse l’Afrique Danse 2008, he is also a performer of The Rite of Spring within the Heddy MAALEM Company and of Nos enfants nous font peur… with the RICTUS/David BOBEE Group. The choreographer extends the affirmation of his artistic personality with his piece On The Steps… Winner of the first Prize of the African and Indian Ocean Choreographic Encounters and the Puma Creative Prize in Bamako. Enriched by the encounters and experiences that have nourished him in his career as a performer in Congo and abroad, he has developed a choreographic writing of his own. He continues to confront his choreographic work by collaborating with other choreographers such as: dance teacher Laurent Longa Fo, choreographer Andreya Ouamba, choreographer Gregory Maqoma, director David Bobée, author writer Ronan Chéneau, playwright Dieudonné Niangouna, playwright and director Hedi Clermont De Tonnerre… He is also initiated into the Hip Hop dynamic, he is inspired by the urban territory. His intimate choreographic universe revolves around suspension and the joy of movement, the jubilation in danced movement. Clearly contemporary, it reflects his time, sometimes bordering on the avant-garde…
