La libération comme pratique, le mythe, le rite et le corps se mêlent pour donner sens au pouvoir détenu en marge. Dans un monde où mythes, rites et corps s’entremêlent, cette installation vidéo en trois chapitres explore le terrain viscéral de la libération comme pratique. Avec pour toile de fond les Gnawa – une communauté diasporique forgée par les cicatrices de l’esclavage – le film explore la manière dont l’identité est continuellement négociée et remodelée en réponse aux forces sociales, culturelles et politiques. À travers des images évocatrices et des paysages sonores immersifs, le récit suit les rencontres rituelles avec les djnun, ou esprits, qui revendiquent la domination des corps, exigeant soumission par des offrandes de musique, de transe et de sacrifice. Ces rites, à la fois oppressifs et émancipateurs, révèlent l’interaction délicate entre pouvoir et soumission, propriété et libération. Les trois chapitres explorent les marges comme lieux de transformation, où domination et subordination se rencontrent et se dissolvent dans une danse palpitante de survie et de renouveau. À travers le prisme de la diaspora en tant que constellation de pratiques, l’installation vidéo récupère le corps comme un vaisseau de résistance, où les frontières entre soi et l’esprit s’estompent, donnant naissance à une nouvelle forme d’existence.

Liberation as a practice, the myth, the rite, and the body mingle to give meaning to the power held in the margins. In a world where myths, rites, and bodies entwine, this video installation in three chapters delves into the visceral terrain of liberation as a practice. Set against the backdrop of the Gnawa—a diasporic community forged through the scars of slavery — the film explores the ways identity is continuously negotiated and remade in response to social, cultural, and political forces. Through evocative imagery and immersive soundscapes, the narrative follows the ritualistic encounters with the jnun, or spirits, who claim dominion over bodies, demanding submission through offerings of music, trance, and sacrifice. These rites, both oppressive and emancipatory, reveal the delicate interplay between power and surrender, ownership and liberation. The three chapters are an exploration of the margins as sites of transformation, where domination and subordination meet and dissolve into a pulsating dance of survival and renewal. Through the lens of diaspora as a constellation of practices, the video installation reclaims the body as a vessel of resistance, where the boundaries between self and spirit blur, giving rise to a new form of existence.

Nabil Aniss (b. Meknès, Morocco – 1990) is a Moroccan artist working with moving images, and living between Brussels and Meknès. Through moving images, Nabil Aniss explores the complex relationship between political liberation and the transcendental handling of marginalised bodies in the mystical brotherhoods* in Morocco, particularly in his home town of Meknès, such as Gnawa, Hmadcha and Issawa.
