A Ciphered Blade

Ce projet d’art vidéo propose une analyse critique des dynamiques spatiales et relationnelles inhérentes aux salons de coiffure égyptiens, remettant ainsi en question et déconstruisant les constructions traditionnelles de la masculinité. Ces établissements, espaces apparemment utilitaires, fonctionnent comme des espaces sociaux complexes où des gestes intimes sont pratiqués sous couvert de soins. Hors de ces limites, de tels contacts et communications seraient largement inacceptables pour de nombreux hommes hétérosexuels en Égypte.

This video art project serves as a critical examination of the spatial and relational dynamics inherent within Egypt’s barber shops, thereby challenging and deconstructing traditional constructs of masculinity. These establishments, ostensibly utilitarian spaces, function as complex social arenas where gestures of intimacy are performed under the guise of grooming. Outside these confines, such touch and communication would be largely unacceptable among a lot of straight men in Egypt.
