/si:n/ Festival of Video Art & Performance
Festival of Video Art & Performance is the fruit of a collaboration based on active participation in shaping a vision, tackling the details and the distribution of tasks and responsibilities between the institutions organising and hosting the festival’s various activities in the venues in Ramallah, Jerusalem, Gaza and Birzeit. These partnering institutions share an interest and the desire to deliver this important event, and a keenness to make it a success. Each offers the best support possible, whether it be available resources, actual human help or physical spaces.
This festival – which can be considered a historic event in the cultural life in Palestine – is also a result of a state of maturity of the level of the work of the institutions on the one hand and of art practices on the other. The initial idea was to hold a video art festival, an idea that was a natural evolution from a season of video art previously organised by the A.M. Qattan Foundation in partnership with the French Cultural Center in Ramallah and Les Instants Video in Marseille. This then evolved into holding a festival that would also include performance art because of the overlapping and interconnectivity between these two art forms, and the confusion (at times) that can surround the relationship between them.
As this festival is the first event of its kind to be organised in Palestine, the first programme round does not have a specific theme or topic. It is rather meant to be an introduction that aims to open a door for dialogue, offer a wide exposure to video and performance art, and introduce many platforms for viewing and for discussion and learning.
Therefore a variety of important art works by prominent artists from various parts of the world will be presented within the festival’s framework alongside important artworks produced by Palestinian artists during the past decade. This is in addition to many artists’ talks, thematic based video screenings, a training workshop, and a special programme of video work produced by students from the International Academy of Arts - Palestine.
We aim to organise this festival every two years, hoping to succeed in establishing it as a part of Palestinian art and cultural life, and that it will contribute towards enriching it and be a qualitative addition to it. We hope that it will become an important international platform capable of attracting distinctive local, Arab and international participations, and a forum for meeting, dialogue, knowledge and production.
We would like to thank all those institutions and individuals who have contributed towards the realisation of this event, especially the participating artists and the collaborating and supporting institutions, and we hope the audience will find the festival’s various events beneficial and enjoyable.
