Qu'est allé faire mon père en ce pays hostile ? Sous le Troisième Reich, il était allé en prison, puis en camp de concentration. Il n'en parla jamais, sombra dans l'alcoolisme, exposa sa famille aux humiliations, à la honte, à la perte d'identité. Endettée jusqu'au cou, ma famille retourne en Allemagne, à Berlin-Ouest en 1964. Mon père est mort en 1996. Quel est le terrible secret dont il n'a jamais pu parler et qui a pesé sur toute sa famille ? Avec ce film, je veux me libérer d'un silence écrasant, d'une peur qui continue de hanter ma vie. Ma mémoire ayant occulté beaucoup de choses, j'implique ma famille, je vais sur les lieux de la vie de mon père, à la recherche de témoignages… Note de contenu : In Michael Gaumnitz’s "Exil in Sedan (Exile in Sedan)", the director eventually finds out why his father had left Dresden in a hurry shortly after the war to emigrate with his family to the industrial town of Sedan in northeastern France, where ever since the First World War Germans are hardly welcomed, only to return to Germany many years later to spend his last days alone as he drank himself to death. Searching to discover what kind of man his father was, Gaumnitz traces the reasons for his father’s affiliation and downfall as a young Nazi recruit, how in the course of the war he had weathered some frightful experiences as an army pen-artist on the front, how he later had to survive by his wits as a black marketeer in war-torn Dresden, and why he was always just a step ahead of his creditors during his Exile in Sedan. In short, the thin line between perpetrator and victim is effectively rubbed out in this intriguing family document. The child enters the grandparent’s house, a vry strict, religious and proper world, embedded into a chronologically controlled daily routine. A place that doesn’t concede any space to the requirements of a child. The camera follows consequently the gaze of the child, that, focussed on certain things, develops its own strategies of escape. Hyperspaces with its own horizons of childish imagination arises in the mind’s eye, temporary refuges, that don’t offer a real way out and ends again and again in the claustrophobic space of memory. Son père est estonien, sa mère est russe. Lorsque sa mère fut incarcérée, elle vécut quelques mois avec son père, mais le quitta pour habiter chez une amie. Sa mère libérée, elles vinrent toutes deux s’installer à Sillamäe, où elles trouvèrent un milieu russe plus familier pour elles, et c’est là que je l’ai rencontrée. Dans ce film, Katrin évoque les relations entre Russes et Estoniens en Estonie ainsi que la question des passeports : son père a le passeport bleu, estonien, sa mère a le passeport gris : le passeport des apatrides donnés aux russes qui souhaitaient rester en Estonie après l’indépendance en 1991 et ce, sans passer les examens de langue et civilisation nécessaires pour obtenir la nationalité estonienne. Note de contenu : A teenage girl born in Tallinn from a Russian father and an Estonian mother tells about her pain and sorrow when her mother was put in jail, her identity torn apart and eventually her moving in with her mother in Sallamaë where she finds the familiar Russian community again. Katrin does not appear on-screen. An arm, a hand fleetinglypunctuate, accompany her breathing. Her hesitation. Her melodious and doleful voice emerges from the dark. In a bluish undergrowth, trees slowly scroll by in backward motion. In this discepancy with the immediate context, the trees' inconspicuous inversion contributes to be a bewitching confusion with regards to anchorage points. The slow motion and the unaltered testimony come together in the impalpable fusion of two parallels. The vegetal and the voice join together in a correspondence, a continuous image shift. The thin transmutation of this testimony floating about in a temporal and spatial distortion confirms that poetry arises from a loss it endeavors to transform into a consoling complaint. Alone, without any other witness than the artist, Katrin can let out her emotions. In Kesk, 2006, the teenagers have a quite different aproach. (Kesk – meaning « center » in Estonian – because Sillamaë has but one single central street). First filmed all together in a group, they show a certain defiance. Some step out and speak out – in a univocal testimony – about their idleness and withdrawal into their own community. Kept aside by the Estonians, they isolate themselves and claim, not without showing off a bit, to drink and smoke all day long. A young Russian calls an Estonian « Kurat » (devil) while he also feels Estonian, too. There lies the whole dilemma of their identity. The filmmaker chose to slightly desynchronize the moment when faces appear and the moment when one hears their speeches. The reality of a context, as bitter as it may be, inexorably falls into another more indecisive, irresolute and less consensual one. As if her non-distorting preliminary investigations in real life vanished into an unreal dimension. C’est le consulat de Hongrie ? J’appelle pour un renseignement… Une personne dont le grand-père est hongrois, peut-il obtenir un passeport hongrois ? La personne à l’autre bout du fil a un très fort accent hongrois et n’est pas sûre de comprendre ma question, qui apparemment lui semble bizarre : – Un passeport hongrois ? – Oui… C’est possible ? – Oui… – Et… quels sont les papiers nécessaires ? – C’est très compliqué. – Il faut beaucoup de temps ? – Oui, c’est très long. Si vous avez les papiers nécessaires… Prenez un rendez-vous et nous en reparlerons. Cette scène s’est passée, il y a quelques mois. Je ne dis rien à personne, mais voilà que maintenant l’idée ne me quittera plus. Je vais demander à devenir hongroise. Cette démarche administrative – la demande de passeport – sera pas à pas le fil conducteur du film. Je me retrouve confrontée à des questions pour moi essentielles, qu’est-ce qu’une nationalité, à quoi sert un passeport, de quoi héritons-nous ? Note de contenu : A Brazilian film director who has been living in Paris for about ten years decides to investigate her Jewish and Hungarian origins by following, in the reverse order, the steps taken by her grandparents in 1937 and which had led them from Budapest to Rio. In addition to her grandmother's account, she searches the Brazilian and Hungarian archives, digging up treasures, and interviews her family in Rio and in Budapest. She wants to take Hungarian nationality, the one that her grandparents lost.
