Ici, le thème abordé est la fonction de l’artiste… Note de contenu : Are you a painter (1)? Is the first in the series of short videos about the relationship between video and painting and between light and camera.The first video in the series evokes the question about the function of the artist as an artist, and in the same time points the question to the spectator. Are you a painter? (1) Deals with the subject of Light. Light as a phenomenon, transforming into movement and into image. It is the relationship between light-camera and between light-editing constituting the video, as a color stain or drawing rather than a formal zoom-in movement per se. Are You A Painter? (2) Functions as a whole unit where actions are taking place with a beginning, middle and an end. The video interacts with the representation of the image and the painting by using an existing silk-screen containing text. The screen is introduced, painted and washed. Notions of cruelty, abuse and humiliation are prevalent by the use of water against the screen - when the act of washing and cleaning cross the borders of its function. The sound of the video is non-sync and uses rhythm, muting itself in a fixed length, creating a parallel narrative to the image. Are You A Painter? (3) Devoted completely to the Gaze, both of the photographic image and the spectator. The video is constructed from two parts, The Study and The work. The study explores the possibility of the image and the video process, creating anticipation for the second part which functions more as an ‘anti-climax’ and as an anti-video image. Que diraient ces femmes si elles avaient le pouvoir de s’exprimer ? "Voyage pittoresque de Constantinople et des rives du Bosphore" est un livre de gravures d’Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831). La gravure du Harem représente un espace dans lequel errent de drôles de silhouettes de femmes. Contrastant avec les tendances orientalistes de cette période, elles n’arborent pas d’expression dramatique ou séductrice. Ces femmes représentées avec une précision presque scientifique, semblent jetées hors du temps. Mon intérêt pour cette œuvre me pousse à regarder ces femmes non pas comme des objets de connaissance, mais en leur donnant une voix et en les poussant à révéler ce qu’elles cachent. Que se passe-t-il quand ces femmes commencent à agir ? Note de contenu : ‘Voyage Pittoresque de Constantinple et des Rives du Bosphore’ is an album of gravings created by Antoine Ignace Melling (1763-1831). He came to Istanbul with the invitation of Sultan Selim the Third and lived there for 18 years, making these gravings of the city with great love. The Harem graving in the album is the picture of a space in which weird figures of women roam. In contrast to the Orientalist tendencies of the period, there are no dramatic and seductive expressions. Women, illustrated with almost scientific precision, look as if they are thrown out of time. My interest in the Harem urges me to articulate these women beyond being objects of knowledge by giving them a voice and pushing them to reveal whatever they hide. What happens when these women start to act?

I think that with some intervention, these women of the Harem, who have been imprisoned by the scientific talent of the artist, can reveal relationships of interest that are beneath the couple of reality and fantasy. Harem, which is closed to the male gaze, is a mysterious space belonging to the other, which is an object of curiosity and knowledge, and is like the other culture, the other sex. This is why, either male or female, the Western subject is interested in the harem and the veil, in other words, the women’s space, body and reality. Melling’s understanding of the Harem is based on rumors, which allows him to recreate the Harem with his own imagination and artistic skills. The painting negates all doubt by legitimizing the knowledge it contains with the use of Cartesian perspective and is made to hide the unconscious space filled with dreams, desires, fantasies and fears, locking them within itself. The Orientalist discourse and the knowledge produced through it is a way of imagining the East. Today, women are crushed under the burden of both Western and Eastern discourses. Is it possible for a woman, who is at the core of these ideological rhetoric and the social contract, to position herself as a subject? I believe in the necessity of pushing the limits of representation and unsettling iconography and myth.

 I am trying to reach my unrecognizable face in my own culture, through rhetoric figures, representations and images constructed by the Western subject to represent and know the East. By oozing into the Harem, I want to put in motion the untamable and make these frozen images move to open up the possibility of resistance.
